In the United States, it is frequently referred to as "The Anniversary Song", a title given by Al Jolson when he and Saul Chaplin released an adaptation of the song in 1946. "Waves of the Danube" was first published in Bucharest, 1880. It was dedicated to Emma Gebauer, the wife of music publisher Constantin Gebauer.
This tune was used in the very first KPop song, ever, on 1926, believe or not. On 1926, a Korean soprano recorded this song in Japan in Korean, the very first Korean Pop song ever. She jumped to the sea on the way back, making that song, "A Praise to Death" in Korean, immortal. That incident, 89 years later, has not been forgotten.

'사의 찬미'는 Iosif Ivanovici 작곡의 'Donauwellen Walzer'에 윤심덕 자신이 직접 가사를 지어 붙여 일본
에서 녹음한 곡입니다. 그러나 윤심덕은 이 곡을 발표도 하지 못하고 시모노세키를 출발 부산항으로 향하던
배에서 김우진과 함께 현해탄에서 뛰어내려 자살하고 말아서 이 노래는 결국 유작이 되었습니다.

The song was recorded in Osaka, where she met and fell in love with a Korean married man. The two boarded a steamship returning to Korea, but ended their lives by jumping into the sea.
